URL - create and edit

Kate Laine-Toner -

Each consultation you create in Citizen Space will have its own unique website address known as a URL (Uniform Resource Locator). All four consultation types (online, link, offline/explanatory and email/post) have a URL that you can share and promote.

The consultation URL is the direct link to your consultation and you can use it to share the consultation with participants in emails and other marketing materials.

The components of a consultation URL

The URL will be made up of a number of elements relating to your Citizen Space instance.

Public consultation URL

1. This identifies that your site is securely protected

2. This is your domain

3. This is the name of the Department that the consultation has originated from

4. This section is editable. Initially it will be the title given to the consultation when it was set up (although you can edit this).

Private consultation URL

1. This identifies that your site is securely protected

2. This is your domain

3. This is the name of the Department that the consultation has originated from

4. As this is a private survey, this section will be assigned a random set of numbers and/or letters. This section is not editable for a private consultation.

Creating your consultation URL

When you create a consultation in Citizen Space the first two things you need to decide are the consultation title and the URL. This is done in the 'Edit Consultation Details' section which is accessed from the Consultation Dashboard.

As consultation titles may need to be quite long you can edit the final part of the URL so you can keep it short and shareable. This is also known as the 'pathname'. More about how to shorten your URL can be found here.

We recommend the consultation title and URL have some correlation.

To edit the URL go into 'Edit Consultation Details' from the Consultation Dashboard. You can edit the URL by pressing the 'edit' button as shown in the screenshot below.

Click on 'Edit' and change the last section to what you would like. Keep in mind there is a 50 character limit.

Editing a consultation URL

After you have set up your consultation (and before you publish) you are able to edit the URL. NB you can only edit the final section of public consultations. This is done via the Edit Consultation Details page.

Click on 'Edit' and change the last section to what you would like. Keep in mind there is a 50 character limit.

If you have published a consultation or the start date has passed and need to change the URL, you are able to do this but there are a number of things to be aware of. Please read this article on restrictions for editing the URL.

When can I edit a consultation URL?

You can edit a consultation's URL when it is forthcoming or closed.

When can't I edit a consultation URL?

You will not be able to edit the URL of a consultation whilst it's open (ie between its start end dates). The reason for this is that anyone in the process of responding will lose their data. If you must change the URL please read this article on what you should be aware of.

You cannot edit the URL of a private consultation

When you make a consultation private the URL automatically becomes alpha-numeric so that it can only be accessed by people who are given the link. This means the consultation cannot be found in searches or guessed.
