URL - shorten

Kate Laine-Toner -

Each consultation you create within Citizen Space will have a URL. All four consultation types (online, link, offline/explanatory and email/post) have a URL that you can share and promote.

This URL (also known as a web address) is made of different component parts. You are able to edit part of the URL to make it shorter and can also shorten the entire URL using a link-shortening service.

Below are examples of a public consultation URL and a private consultation URL with text explaining the different URL components:

Public consultation URL

1. This identifies that your site is securely protected (not editable)

2. This is your domain (not editable)

3. This is the name of the Department that the consultation has originated from (not editable)

4. This section is editable. Initially it will be the title given to the consultation when it was set up (although you can edit this).

Private consultation URL

1. This identifies that your site is securely protected (not editable)

2. This is your domain (not editable)

3. This is the name of the Department that the consultation has originated from (not editable)

4. As this is a private survey, this section will be obfuscated by a random set of numbers and/or letters. This section is not editable for a private consultation.

How to shorten the URL

All these components together can make for quite a long URL. There are a few things you can do to shorten the URL of your consultation:

  • To shorten the entire URL use a link-shortening service, such as bit.ly or ow.ly. Twitter also has an automatic link shortening feature.
  • Edit the final section of the URL on a public consultation (up to 50 characters)
  • When setting up your Citizen Space site you can use short Department names (not editable once the consultation has been created)
  • Have your IT department create a short URL from your own website - something like 'countycouncil.gov.uk/consultation-name' that redirects to your Citizen Space consultation
