Slider Groups (these are your overall categories) and Slider Items (these are the individual services or priorities inside a group) form the building blocks for your Simulator. These consist of the different areas you need to allocate spend/savings or points to. This article explains how to do this and provides a useful template that you can use to easily collate the information and create the structure for your Simulator.
Slider Groups and Slider Items explained
A Slider Group is an overall area or category (for example, you might call one 'Community Services') and you will be asking respondents to adjust the spend on items within this group.
To carry on using the Community Services example: within this group you might then have Slider Items such as; Adult Education Services, Elderly Nursing Care, Homelessness etc.
Slider Increments are the amounts the respondent can adjust the spend for each Slider Item, and these then add up to the total spend for that Slider group. You can read more about Sliders and how they work here.
Simulator will support the following:
- (advised) up to 7 slider groups
- (advised) up to 6 slider items within each group
- a maximum of 11 increments on any one slider - this is to allow for the sliders to scale properly on smaller screens
You can decide how your Simulator will be structured by considering these questions:
- How many Slider Groups will you have?
- How many Slider Items will you have?
- How many increments will your sliders have?
- What is the total amount of budget/points you are consulting on?
- How much of the total budget/points will be allocated to each Item?
Use our ‘Slider Groups and Slider Items template’ to help you collate this information and create a structure for your Simulator.
How to set up Slider Groups, Items and Increments
You are able to set up the Slider Groups, Items and Increments from the Groups and Sliders Page in the admin side of your Simulator.
You must add all of your sliders before you open the Simulator up to responses. Adding sliders after the Simulator is already open will cause an error in your response exports.
Add the Slider Groups first (we advise a maximum of 7). When you add a new Slider Group you also set the Type, which is whether it is an Income or Expenditure group or - in Points Simulator - an Earn or Spend group. This is the point where you put in the Slider Increments.
Title: Name of Group
Type: Income or Expenditure / Earn or Spend
Scale: Set up your slider, add in how many increments you will need (up to 11).
Repeat for each Slider Group
This image shows the addition of a group in a Budget or Bill simulator where your increments represent the percentage increase or decrease in spending. In Points Simulator, your increments will be points spent or earned.
How to set up Slider Items
Once you have set up the Slider Groups, you can add the Slider Items to each group (we advise up to 6 per group). This is also where you enter the consequences (read here for more info about consequences). See below image for reference.
Title: Name of item
Description: This is a description of that item which will live within the 'i' more info link on the public-facing slider. There is no word limit for these pop out windows.
Last year's spend/income (Budget and Bill Simulators only): Here you enter the amount of total budget which has been allocated to that individual item i.e. how much your organisation spent on this service in a previous year.
Consequences summary: A summary of the consequence of making that choice of spend increase or decrease. 140 suggested character limit. Mobile view works best if short versions of consequences are kept to a maximum of 4 lines.
Consequences detailed: A more detailed description of the consequence of making the choice. Good consequences are specific and accurate as they give the best chance for respondents to understand the potential real-world outcomes of the choices being made. There is no word limit for the expanded version of consequences.
Repeat for each Slider Item
